Global Standard Certification (GSC) (CEO: Jackie Jun) announced on June 18 that it has co-developed verification standards for reef friendly sunscreens and a compliant formula with Wellcos Corporation (CEO: Yeong Don Kim).
Reef Friendly Certification is certification designed to protect the aquatic ecosystem by preventing some ingredients and chemicals contained in sunscreens and different cosmetics from causing damage to marine life, while exacerbating water pollution that is mainly applied to sunscreens.
According to GSC, “Products must be formulated without banned ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate that are dangerous to coral reefs and be water-resistant to obtain Reef Friendly Certification. Companies that acquire Reef Friendly Certification are recognized as ethical companies and this makes it easier for them export products to Europe and America, helping them find new business opportunities.”
GSC and Wellcos Corporation jointly planned the sunscreen formulation technology to propose ODM product manufacturing of Wellcos FRUDIA, a fruit-based antioxidant skincare product, to the Global C&D Center. They plan to take this opportunity to help sustainable K-sunscreens to gain a competitive advantage over rivals in the international market by obtaining Reef Friendly Certification when developing new sunscreens in the years ahead. GSC is also an agency responsible for issuing Reef Friendly Certificates.
A GSC representative said, “Large-scale bleaching of coral reefs is observed across the world. We must protect coral reefs for a sustainable future. This is a significant technology as Reef Friendly Certification has become a necessity rather than a choice for companies for sustainable management.”
